In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law, providing needed health care coverage for seniors. Prior to the law, only 50 percent had health coverage, and 35 percent lived in poverty. Today, over 58 million Americans have coverage through Medicare, with 48 million being over the age of 65.
Since its inception, Medicare has never paid for vision, dental, or hearing care. While there have been several upgrades over the years to include drug and mental health benefits, the coverage for vision, dental, and hearing care have never been added.
Though Medicare does not pay for hearing aids, many insurance policies written by corporations, unions, and government organizations do provide coverage. Chesapeake Hearing Centers keeps a full- time person on staff to check benefits.
