Our Audiologists and Hearing Aid Dispensers

Charles L. Hutto, Au.D., F-AAA
In 1970 while a undergraduate psychology student, Dr. Hutto and his wife Kate took in a deaf foster child who had been misdiagnosed at birth as severely mentally retarded and grossly emotionally disturbed. He spent the first 10 years of his life in an institution with the key thrown away. Finally his hearing loss was discovered and IQ tests placed him in the high normal range. Bewildered that such a tragedy could occur, Dr. Hutto began a period of study and eventually decided to dedicate his work life to the study of hearing loss and service to individuals with impairment of hearing.
As a foster parent he became the first president of the Anne Arundel County Parents of hearing impaired children Association, and along with numerous other parents fought for a better educational opportunity for their kids in the school system.

One of his proudest moments was being chosen to initiate the first in hospital hearing screening program at Anne Arundel General Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Today it is generally the law of the land that all babies born in the US be screened for hearing before leaving the hospital. Dr. and Mrs. Hutto's foster child is now 47 married and living on the eastern shore. Hopefully misdiagnosis and its tragic consequences will now be a thing of the past.

Dr. Hutto graduated from the University of Maryland with high honors, did graduate studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, and earned his Doctor of Audiology degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences. He has served as consultant to the State of Maryland Deaf/Blind Program, consultant audiologist to the State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Crippled Children's Division, and various county health departments. Dr. Hutto has lectured at local and national professional meetings on topics raging from computerized hearing aids to early intervention strategies for hearing-impaired children; and has taught graduate courses at Loyola College. He is a past-president of the Audiological Resource Association and past-president of the Maryland Academy of Audiology.

In 1975 he founded the first audiology clinic outside the public health sector in the state of Maryland. Chesapeake Hearing Centers has grown to serve Anne Arundel County and the Eastern shore with seven offices and a professional staff of nine audiologists and hearing aid dispensers.

 


Dr. Caroline Aland, AuD, F-AAA
Dr. Aland has been in private practice since 1986. She received her bachelor's degree from East Tennessee University in Communicative Disorders, her Master's Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Audiology, and her Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Florida. Her previous experiences include clinical work at Womack Army Hospital, the Durham V.A. Hospital, and ENT Clinic at the University of North Carolina Hospital. She has also served the Deaf/Blind Program at the North Carolina School for the Blind, Chief Contract audiologist, neo-natal intensive-care hearing evaluation service, Anne Arundel Medical Center. Her special expertise is in counseling and fitting computer programmable hearing instruments. Dr. Aland was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the State Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers, and Speech-Language Pathologists for two consecutive terms and served one year as chair.

Personal:
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, raised in Cookeville, Tennessee, she met her husband while attending graduate school in North Carolina. After receiving her Masters she moved to Annapolis, married Tim Aland, and now resides on Kent Island. She went on to obtain her doctorate from the University of Florida. She has worked for Chesapeake Hearing Centers since 1986 and currently functions as the Supervisor of Professional Services for seven offices and sees patients. She is the Past-President of the Bay City Women's Association, teaches Sunday School and was a Girl Scout Leader. Caroline and Tim are raising four children, two sons, Timothy Paul Jr. and David Dinsmore, a daughter, Mary Caroline, and a young cousin Andrew Moser.

 

 


Ashley Mitchell, Au.D., CCC-A
Ashley Mitchell, Au.D, was recently awarded her Doctorate of Audiology from Towson University. She received her bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders from The University of Maine in 2004. Her scope of practice includes diagnostic, vestibular and hearing aid work with patients of all ages. Previous clinical experience includes time spent at the Towson University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, the Baltimore City Public School Systems, Maryland Audiology, and the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) Cochlear Implant Center. Dr. Mitchell completed her fourth year externship at the end of May 2008 here at Chesapeake Hearing Center (CHC) where she will continue to work with the CHC staff and patients.

Dr. Ellen Alvarez Frederick, Au.D., FAAA CCC-A
Dr. Frederick, a native of Anne Arundel County, has been in practice since 1989. She graduated from West Virginia University, received her master's degree in audiology from the University of South Carolina, and earned her doctorate degree from A.T. Still University. Her previous work experience includes clinical work at the University of Maryland Medical Center, The University of Maryland Tinnitus & Hyperacusis Center, Maryland Audiology, University Medical Center of Las Vegas and the Medical University of South Carolina.

Published in peer-reviewed journals on various audiology topics, Dr. Frederick has served on the board of directors of the Maryland Academy of Audiology. She has expertise in the evaluation of hearing and fitting of hearing systems in adults and children and tinnitus management.

 

 


 


Allison C. Adkins, Hearing Aid Dispenser

Alison Adkins recently joined the staff of Chesapeake Hearing Centers and assists the audiologists in fitting and caring for hearing aids. She is a native of Grand Rapids, MI and graduated from Huntington University in 2005 with a bachelors degree in elementary education and a minor in spanish, after studying abroad in Spain for a semester. The daughter of missionaries Allison spent seven years in Bolivia and Paraguay as a child and developed a passion for helping people and building relationships.

A resident of Berlin for the last three years, she was married in October of 2008 and joined the staff in March. Allison enjoys living on the Maryland coast and loves working for a company that puts their patients' needs first.

 

 


 


Kristin Wilson, Au.D.
Doctor of Audiology

Dr. Kristin Wilson, Au.D., received her doctorate from Towson University and fulfilled her clinical fellowship requirements with Chesapeake Hearing Centers. She was raised in the quiet town of Wheeling, WV and attended West Virginia University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology and Audiology.

Her previous audiological experience includes: graduate student training at the Towson University Speech-Language and Hearing Center, hearing assessment, treatment and auditory training and rehabilitation for children - birth to school-age - at the York Learning Center and with Early Intervention Specialists Inc., hearing and balance services at ENTAA Care, and assessment and treatment of patients with a variety of hearing related diseases and disorders at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Kristin's scope of practice includes comprehensive diagnostic testing, hearing device assessment, configuration and repair, ENG and balance testing, central auditory processing assessment, evoked potential testing, and audiologic rehabilitation.

An active member of her community, Dr. Wilson's volunteer service includes blood drives, the walk for breast cancer, and healthy hearing screenings for the Special Olympics. She recently moved from Towson to the Eastern Shore and is excited to be near the beach in Ocean Pines. Dr. Wilson can be seen in our Ocean Pines and Salisbury (East Park) offices for basic audiologic and tinnitus assessment, cerumen management, hearing device evaluation and counseling, and other hearing device troubleshooting and repair services. She also sees patients for vestibular and balance testing in our East Park office. Dr. Wilson sees patients in our Ocean Pines office Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday afternoons and sees patients in the Salisbury (East Park) office all day Tuesdays and Thursdays and on Fridays until noon.

 


Mariya Elizabeth Hutto, Hearing Aid Dispenser

Mariya Elizabeth Hutto has worked for Chesapeake Hearing Centers for most of her life in different capacities and is now office manager and assists the audiologists in fitting and caring for hearing aids. She graduated magna cum laude from St. Mary's College of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2000 and feels that the degree taught her a great deal about the workings of the brain, human behavior and research. She also has a master's degree in Information Science from the University of Maryland. She is licensed to dispense hearing aids by the states of Maryland and Delaware and sees patients in both Severna Park and Annapolis. Her favorite part of her work is building relationships with the many people she meets every day. They have truly been her greatest teachers.


 

 

 

Amber J. Rosen, Graduate Student Clinician

Amber J. Rosen, a newlywed and a native of Pittsburgh, is currently fullling the fourth year of her doctoral requirements for a clinical doctorate of audiology (Au.D.) from Salus University located near Philadelphia. After years of volunteer experience working with the deaf community, and training in American Sign Language, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from East Carolina University, and has since decided to specialize in the understanding and treatment of hearing loss.

Her graduate program has involved specialized coursework not oered in many other Au.D. programs including: pharmacology, vestibular (balance) disorders evaluation and treatments, intraoperative monitoring, cochlear implant candidacy and management, and tinnitus assessment and management. Amber’s clinical experiences include: The Pennsylvania Ear Institute, Aberdeen Audiology, Hearing Health Professionals, Berk’s Hearing Professionals. Medical hospital experience includes: The audiology department at the VA hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, and JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. During her clinical rotations she has performed Auditory Brainstem Response testing for the purposes of identify hearing loss in infants and toddlers, and Vestibular evaluations (including Videonystagmography or VNGs).

Although she enjoys the technical and diagnostic aspects of audiology, her passion continues to be the relationships she builds with patients and her desire to help them to communicate and function at their fullest potential. She prides herself in being given the opportunity to be a part of Chesapeake Hearing Centers’ commitment to outstanding patient care. Amber is currently seeing patients daily at five of the six CHC locations.

 

 

Krystle Hanna, B.A.

Krystle Hanna is currently a fourth year audiology doctorate-level student at Montclair State University. She received her bachelor's degree in hearing and speech sciences and psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2008. Her scope of practice includes diagnostic, vestibular, and hearing aid work with patients of all ages. Previous clinical experience includes time spent at the Montclair State University Center for Hearing and Balance, Kennedy Krieger Institute, Saint Clare Hospital, the Lake Drive Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students, and Northern New Jersey ENT Associates.
